Sir,

I am directed by the Board of Trade to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 4th instant, No. 26944 /1902, in which you enclose copy of a despatch from the officer Administering the Government of Hong Kong, for- warding copy of correspondence relating to a proposal for deepening and dredging and lighting the Harbour.

In reply, I am to request that you will state to Mr Secretary Chamberlain that the Board are not in a position to express an opinion with regard to the pro- posed deepening of the Harbour; but, with reference to the proposals for lighting the Harbour referred to

in paragraph 8 of the above despatch, the Board are advised that the scheme will meet the present requirements of the port.

The tracing enclosed in your letter is returned, herewith, in accordance with your request.
